I was fascinated to read the science behind why the ever-popular CBD oil is providing so many individuals who suffer from breakouts and skin complaints with a viable option for clear skin and relief from acne.
Acne is a condition characterised by red spots on the skin, especially on the face, due to inflamed or infected sebaceous glands. It’s a condition that can affect anyone at any age.
Dietary and lifestyle changes can make improvements, particularly stabilising blood sugars and insulin production and reducing stress. The fat-soluble nutrient Vitamin A is also important for healthy, clear skin.
For some individuals however, the journey to clear skin is paved with ups and downs and can be very frustrating as different approaches and lifestyle changes may provide some improvement, but not the long-lasting, consistent results many are looking for.
CBD oil has received much hype recently for it’s effects on multiple systems of the body. These include the immune system, the central nervous system and the endocrine (hormonal system).
Creating balance in these systems is partly down to a series of receptors discovered in the nineties by scientists, called the endocannabinoid system. This system of receptors clustered throughout the body, is located in the brain, small intestine, joints, large intestine and sebaceous glands in the skin. We have more of these receptors throughout the body than any other type of receptors!
When the body produces it’s own cannabinoids, it has an anti-inflammatory and calming effect on the body through interacting directly with the endocannabinoid system. However, our own production of these powerful molecules, can become reduced due to a number of reasons. Poor diet, lack of sleep, stress and chronic health and autoimmune conditions can result in lower levels of our own cannabinoids. This is very common with many individuals and as such, taking an oral cannabinoid such as CBD oil can have great beneficial effects.
For healthy skin, the anti-inflammatory effect CBD creates through interacting with the endocannabinoind system is believed to help restore clear, healthy skin. There has been another discovery with the use of CBD and clear skin and that is the direct effect CBD has on the production of sebum, the oily substance produced by the sebaceous glands in the skin. When sebum production is too high, the oily substance can cause blockages in the pores, providing a breeding ground for bacteria and causing inflamed, sore, red lumps and spots.
CBD interacts with endocannabinoid receptors at the cellular level of the sebaceous gland, activating cell membrane receptors (TRPV4) and normalising sebum production. This down regulates sebum production to normal levels, leading to clear, healthy skin and unclogged pores.
