Autoimmune conditions and CBD...what do we know?
CBD and autoimmune conditions
An autoimmune condition occurs when our immune system becomes dysfunctional and begins to see parts of our body as foreign invaders. The immune system is on heightened attack and can wreak havoc at a cellular and systemic level.
Autoimmune conditions such as IBD (irritable bowel disease), where an individual may experience pain, cramping, bloating and diarrhoea, have been shown to produce lower levels of our own body’s production of cannabinoids. Other conditions that have been shown to produce low levels of cannabinoids are fibromyalgia, where the individual suffers from pain, fatigue, stiffness, sleep problems and IBS and MS.
What are cannabinoids?
Cannabinoids are molecules that we produce naturally that interact with a series of receptors throughout the body. These receptors are densely populated in the small intestine, large intestine, brain, joints and liver. They form a network called the endocannbinoid system. It has been reported that this natural system within our body holds more cannabinoid receptors than any other receptor in the body! The endocannabinoid system regulates a variety of biological processes, such as relaxation, sleep, certain inflammatory reactions and has even been shown to be the network through which your gut and brain communicate.
When our own levels of cannabinoids are low, which can occur with certain autoimmune conditions such as MS, fibromyalgia and IBS, then this important endocannabinoid system does not function optimally. When we introduce a product such as CBD oil, then the naturally occurring cannabinoids within the CBD oil interact with this network of receptors to create balance. The results can be improved sleep, a reduction in inflammation and pain, improved levels of relaxation and calm and even improved cognitive function.
Many people are now experiencing improved health and wellbeing from CBD, even those who don’t suffer from any specific condition…why?
In the environment we live in, we are continuously exposed to toxins, whether that be in the air we breathe, the way our food is grown, manufactured or processed, the toxic levels of stress we are under, lack of sleep and eating the wrong types of food. They all contribute to creating an imbalance within our central nervous system and our immune system.
This can create aches, pains, anxiety, migraines and sleep problems.
When internal balance is restored, improvements in all of these areas can be experienced.
CBD is a natural, effective way of creating balance using the ancient network of receptors, the endocannbinoid system and can kick start the body into better sleep and feelings or relaxation.
The reduction of addictive pain medication recently reported in America since the introduction of CBD to the market is incredibly exciting as addictive pain medication can have catastrophic effects on our long term health and wellbeing.
CBD really is where the power of natural medicine meets science and wellbeing.
